THE PROJECT
We are students majoring in Multimedia Arts at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Our collective mission is to raise awareness and educate people about the ongoing challenges of food insecurity in the Philippines. Our primary objective is to assist underprivileged communities that are grappling with undernutrition due to a lack of access to sufficient and varied food choices.
As we became more acquainted with the experiences of these individuals in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognized that despite the world transitioning to a ‘new normal,’ the issue of ensuring that these communities have enough nutritious food on their tables still persists.
Based on our extensive research findings and the insights gained along the way, we are driven to create an online community that brings together like-minded individuals that uphold the same objectives: to support those in need and make food and nutrition more accessible to everyone.
RESEARCH PAPER
The Food Insecurity Conditions of Poverty Threshold Households in Metro Manila Peri- and Post-COVID 19
ABSTRACT
The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the food insecurity experiences of people in Metro Manila due to a number of factors including food availability and accessibility with the most vulnerable group being the poor and the poorest. However, food insecurity is a persisting national concern even before the health crisis and is still affecting households to date.
This study used a mix of quantitative and qualitative research design to determine whether a significant difference exists between the food insecurity experience of poverty threshold households. It made use of a modified Food Insecurity Experience Scale-Survey Module (FIES-SM) and interview questions based on the same structure to gather self-reported experiences from the respondents.
The results of this study show that there is no significant difference in the household incomes of the participants in peri and post-pandemic. Moreover, although conditions may have improved after the pandemic surge, the calculations indicate that the COVID-19 health crisis played little role in defining food insecurity.
This suggests that the food insecurity in Metro Manila is consistent with its severity regardless of the circumstances brought about by the pandemic and there is still an urgent need to attend to this social concern even after the health emergency has ended.
